Try these suggestions for some common problems.  

Windows PC Computers and Laptops 

Problem: Windows Defender is blocking the EndNote download: 

To continue the download – Click on ‘Keep it anyway’ 

The downloading process should continue. 

After the installation complete install any updates  

Problem: Security settings on a Windows PC preventing unknown apps from being downloaded onto your computer.

To allow the download, you may need to temporarily change your settings:

1. Search for Windows Security in the Start menu (Windows 10) or select Settings, then Privacy & Security and Windows Security (Windows 11)

2. Select App & Browser Control and click on the Reputation-based protection settings link.

3. Under Potentially unwanted app blocking untick Block downloads (Windows 10) or turn off SmartScreen and Potentially unwanted app blocking (Windows 11)

4. Download EndNote then immediately restore the security settings.

Problem: You’ve been asked for an EndNote License Product Key: 

1. Right-click on the downloaded EndNote file in your downloads folder  

2. Choose the "Extract All" menu option - click OK to run the installer. 

3. Follow the prompts that then appear on the screen 

Problem: You’ve installed EndNote –but nothing is happening  

Try searching for EndNote from the start menu in the bottom left of the screen 

If it appears: open the programme to begin using EndNote 

If EndNote does not appear: 

1. Go to your downloads folder 

2. Double-click on the ‘Massey EndNote 21 & Massey Profile’ to start the installer 

3. Follow the steps to install the software 

Mac iOS  

Problem: You get an error message “Clarivate Analytics EndNote 21 Massey.pkg” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software” 

Follow the steps on this FAQ 

Problem: You’ve downloaded EndNote – but nothing is happening  

Try to find EndNote in Finder > Applications 

You can launch EndNote from here 

Look for the EndNote menus at the top of your screen. 

If EndNote is not in Applications: 

Go to your downloads  

Double-click on the EndNote 21.pkg to start the installation process.  

If the double click doesn’t work – right click and ‘Extract’ to open the package.
